Overview

  • Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) is a guideline indicating how welding should be executed during production processes. Its purpose is to support the planning and quality control of welding operations. EN ISO 15609 stipulates details in the form of a list of items for which records are required.
  • For certain codes or for certain organizations, welding procedures and certificates of welder qualifications are compulsory. In the case of Europe, this must be approved by a Notified Body (an inspection body accredited by a European Member State) or a similarly accredited third-party certification body in accordance with this Directive. The results approved by such organizations are recognized in the relevant countries as being suitable in compliance with applicable standards and technical standards.

1. Prepare welding protocol
  • Procedure number
  • Procedure type
  • Size, type and overall scheme of consumables
  • Consumables firing requirements
  • Base material grade and specification
  • Thickness range
  • Plate or pipe, diameter range
  • Welding position
  • Seam tack welding, pretreatment, cleaning, dimensioning, etc.
  • Backing strip, back gouging information
  • Preheating (minimum temperature and method)
  • Interlayer temperature (if necessary)
  • Post-weld heat treatment (if necessary)
  • Welding technology (weaving, maximum welding width, etc.)
  • If an impact test is required or the welding material is sensitive to thermal input, specify the Arc energy limit.
2. Welding
  • Weld test samples in the presence of a certification body official according to specification requirements.
  • Record detailed test information such as welding current and preheating during the test.
3. Testing
Conduct destructive and non-destructive tests such as radiation and mechanical tests on test samples in compliance with regulations stipulated in welding procedure standards.
4. Certification
5. Welder approval
