Overview

In the middle of the 18th century, when British marine insurers needed information on their merchant ships, an organization called a “classification” began to emerge. At the time, insurers often underwrote insurance without being able to inspect the boat and make a judgment about its superiority or inferiority. As a result, fraudulent shipowners would masquerade old ships as if they were good ships, then deliberately scuttled them to receive significant insurance payouts. There are still examples of this today.
In order to prevent this scam, insurers set up a technical group composed of retired captains or carpenters with rich expertise and experience in ships and started the work of grading ships.
With the development of ships, the inspection technology of classifications has also developed. More than 200 years of experience and accumulated technology help ensure the safety of today's ships by establishing precedent rules for ship structure, strength, shipbuilding materials, equipment, ship supplies, and manufacturing. In addition, classification is important in that it plays a leading role in the development of the shipbuilding industry and related industries.
